We are making a space to dream big, create, display, perform, learn, and exchange skills.
Making a space to feel welcome in.
This collaboration between Shademakers and Turner Works is built on a shared passion for making and experimentation fuelled by DIY energy.
The project has taken inspiration from the rich cultural history of Ryde and the Isle of Wight as a place of creativity and celebration, notably being the site of the UK’s first carnival and setting in motion the long-standing tradition of carnivals on the island. The building has seen many iterations, growing organically over time from a commercial blacksmiths and ironmongers into the Elizabeth Packs department store. The proposed design weaves these histories together with Shademakers’ ambition, creating a new identity for the building and providing a platform for Ryde’s creative community to thrive.
Art at its heart
Shademakers UK are delighted that we have been awarded a capital grant from the DCMS Cultural Development Fund.
This fund enables the capital development of DEPARTMENT, an exciting, bold, new cultural event and workspace created by transforming a historically significant former department store in the heart of Ryde, Isle of Wight. The former ‘Packs’ department store in Cross Street, Ryde has become Shademakers new base and is already home to artists, makers and workshop facilitators. This funding now allows for the building works to begin as we develop this space into a state-of-the-art creative resource for the whole island.
Paul McLaren, Artistic Director of Shademakers UK said “We need to look at a new world, we need to look at the future and how we celebrate and work together as people.”
“Department has the potential to serve as a prime example of how to restore and reuse an otherwise redundant building in the centre of a community” Bob Seely MP, Isle of Wight.
Sharon George, Creative Director of Shademakers UK said ““We intend to fill the streets, bring the colour, bring the celebration, but also bring the story, heritage and meaning behind what we’re doing and a lot of what we do is to just regenerate streets and cities and towns to make people proud of where they live”
Key moments in the history of Ryde, its creative community and the Packs building.
